ABOUT.

The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines is designed to give a thorough understanding of the factors that account for the style, quality and price of the principal still, sparkling and fortified wines of the world.

The qualification will assist those who are required to make professional evaluations of wines with regards to their style, quality and price. The qualification provides the in-depth product knowledge required to underpin job skills and competencies, for example in product selection in the retail and hospitality sectors.

Successful candidates will be able to describe the characteristics of the principal wines of the world and give information on the key factors influencing style, quality and price. They will consequently be in a position to advise management, to answer customer queries authoritatively, and to make informed selections of wines in a variety of situations

OBJECTIVE.

  • The key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing, winemaking, maturation and bottling
  • The key characteristics of the principal:
    • still wines of the world
    • sparkling wines of the world
    • fortified wines of the world
  • How to make appropriate wine recommendations
  • How to taste wines using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)
  • Taste a minimum of 70 samples.

Assessment & Certification.

Candidates will be required to pass a closed-book examination, comprising two units.

Unit 1: A theory examination of two parts to be completed in two hours. The paper comprises:
• 50 multiple-choice questions
• 4 x 25 mark short written answer questions

A mark of 55 per cent in each part is required to achieve a pass in this unit of the qualification.

Unit 2: A tasting examination in the form of a blind tasting of two wines to be completed in 30 minutes.

A mark of 55 per cent is required to achieve a pass in this unit of the qualification.

In order to be awarded the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines, candidates must achieve a pass in both units of the examination.

Exam will be scheduled about 2-2.5 months after the course end to provide ample time for reversion.

Upon successful completion you will receive a digital WSET Level 3 Award in Wine certificate and lapel pin upon request, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

Transition to Digital Certificates & Badges
For exams starting 1 August 2025, WSET will issue certificate and badge in digital version only.

Physical badges will still be available and will not be charged upon request with a proof of the qualification.

However, they are subject to stock availability and waiting time.
